"I chose to study at York because it was the only University that offered a renowned Electronic Engineering course with a specialisation in Music Technology. The course is challenging, but the application of what is taught to my particular areas of interest (music technology) means that there is always an incentive to learn what is being taught. A broad range of subjects are covered, from computer programming to digital synthesis, so there’s always at least something of particular interest! So far I’ve especially enjoyed the ‘acoustics and psychoacoustics’ course.

A group project undertaken at the end of the first year allows you to get creative in applying what you’ve learned over the course of the year. We decided to use variable MIDI controls to modulate and alter the sound coming out of an acoustic drum, in order to make it sound more ‘interesting’!

The University is a relatively small one, as is York as a city. However, York is full of character, with lots of things to do, and Leeds is only 30 minutes away by train if you want to visit a slightly larger city (with trains returning until about 3am).

I’ve managed to get a job within the Student Union as a sound engineer for events on campus, which complements what I’ve learned on the course well. I’d imagine that when I graduate I would be equally well equipped to move into either a practical or theoretical side of most things music technology or electronics related."
