Richard is pursuing the MEng Electronic Engineering degree programme:
“I’m now studying my third year of a four year MEng Electronic Engineering course at York . It’s almost three years since I decided to come to York now, and it hasn’t disappointed, even though not everything has turned out to be quite like I expected. My original reasons for coming to York were the reputation of the University and of the Electronics department, but more importantly the campus setting on the edge of such a nice city. York is also a convenient 2 hour drive from home, although I’ve hardly had the time to go back and visit with all of the extra things that I’ve been involved with.
My first two years at York have flown by. There’s been plenty of work to do and its getting really interesting and in depth now we’ve covered the foundations in the first two years. It’s really good how the modules which I’m currently studying build on previous ones, as it makes you appreciate how important having a solid understanding of the basics is. Currently we’ve just started the software engineering group project which I’m really looking forward to. We also did a group project in the first year which ran as a competition and lets you make use of what you learn in the first year.
Besides getting a degree from York , I know I’ll leave with much more. I’ve been playing hockey for the university, which being such a large sports club also provides a lot of social events throughout the year, as well as a great night out every week. As an alternative to sport, I’ve also been involved with running the student cinema, which has been a great experience, which I definitely never expected to have.
Once I’ve finished studying at York , having a degree from a highly recognised academic institution and some valuable work experience should hopefully provide me with everything I need to get a job that’s right for me. Currently, I think I will continue on with electronics and work in the electronics industry, but there are many other options as well once you have a good degree. I’m certainly not looking forward to having to leave York , but when the time comes I know that I’ll be ready.
