Greg Melia

Greg is pursuing the MEng Electronic Engineering degree programme:

“When I was applying to universities, I wanted to do something that I was interested in, that would get me a job and that was in a good location. York fitted all three. The city itself is big enough to have everything you need and more, but still has a really individual, small town character. Since the university's also fairly small, you'll always bump into someone you know. York's also near the Yorkshire Dales and Moors, which is ideal if, like me, you like rock climbing, hiking or mountain biking.

The main reason I came here was because I liked the department and the degree course, and it hasn't disappointed. I'm doing the straight Electronic Engineering 4 year course, which is relatively specialised (it avoids any sort of electrical power engineering) but gives plenty of scope for choice. Today I've been fabricating a silicon accelerometer in the clean-room, tomorrow I'll be doing work on an autopilot system and next term, I'll be doing a project with Leeds General Infirmary, measuring people's body water content using VHF radio. To my mind, degrees don't get much cooler than that. Not everything you learn is precisely to your taste, and I certainly regret not doing Further Maths at A-level, but it's possible to customise your degree to fit most preferences. It's also useful that the staff are really approachable. If you've got a problem, who better to ask than a national or world authority in the area?!

After my second year, I had to take a year out for medical reasons, but the department did everything they could to help me. Re-starting my degree was as painless as possible, I was given extra time in exams, and the third year group project (Software Engineering) even helped me get to know people in my new year group. I'm now in my final year, and it's time to look at what to do after graduation. I'm actually doing a year's volunteering next year, but thanks to all the opportunities advertised by the Careers Service, I'm not worried about finding a job afterwards.

Electronics at York has been a very positive experience for me. Do it, and I'm sure you'll find the same.
