"I am currently in my final year of the MEng Electronic Engineering with Music Technology Systems program.

I chose to study in York for a variety of reasons, most of which were formed when I visited the university.

Firstly, the city itself is fabulous. It's very different to my local towns and cities, with a nice mix of high street chains and small independent, quirky, shops which are great to explore. It's steeped in history with some fascinating architecture and interesting sights to investigate as well.

Secondly, the size of the university itself appealed to me, it's not so big that you feel insignificant but not so small that there's nothing to do and no one to see. It's really nice to wander around the campus and the city and bump into people you know.

Finally, the course itself contained a great mix of technical teaching and creativity. This was ideal for me as originally I had wanted to study a degree in pure Music Technology but after much debate I eventually decided that studying something more varied and with a technical grounding would stop me being left pigeon-holed when looking at career options.

The best thing about studying for an Electronic Engineering degree, is the variety of work that you do. From modules that give a strong foundation in electronics theory, circuits, noise and such like; to computer programming in languages such as C and Java; to business modules about Accounting and Management Strategies; to Communications Theory, Maths and much more.

I have always dreamed that one day I will have my own production company, and whilst this dream is still only in the pipeline, the structure of the course gives options to take business related modules, things like Accounting and Finance and Marketing Techniques which have given me invaluable knowledge for when I do attempt to realise this dream.

Soon I will soon be starting my final year project, where I'll be trying to develop a system that can analyse audio recordings of music therapy sessions. Music therapy is vital to improving the quality of many peoples lives in a massive variety of ways, for example a child with Autism may find their communication skills improve after undergoing music therapy or someone with Cerebral Palsy may improve their balance and coordination skills with therapy sessions. Sadly, Music Therapists are under increasing pressure to prove that their therapy works with statistical evidence and not just anecdotal stories from parents. The system that I will be working on should allow the therapists to concentrate on the therapy they give as they will be able to analyse their sessions at the touch of a button rather than spending hours reviewing tapes looking for improvements in their clients abilities. I feel very honoured to know that the work that I'll be doing will hopefully allow therapists to concentrate on what they should be doing, and not proving their worth to the NHS in order to retain funding.

Did I make the right choice? Definitely.
