Rowan de Pomerai

Rowan de Pomerai , 2007

Trainee Technologist, BBC

"Having always had an interest in technology and media, but wanting a solid technical grounding behind me, the Electronic Engineering with Digital Media Systems degree at York seemed a perfect choice when I applied for University. My decision to apply to York was influenced further by the great facilities on offer, such as first-rate student media including award winning television and radio stations. My four years at York were extremely enjoyable, and I am so pleased I made the decision to study there.

During my final year at York I started applying for jobs, and was successful in an application to join the BBC Future Media and Technology. I am now enjoying life in London, working for one of the world's biggest broadcasters. BBC Research and Innovation is an exciting place to be, and although we're undergoing some upheaval due to an upcoming site move, the opportunities opening up ahead of me as a result are amazing.

I currently work in a portfolio called 'Production Magic', where I'm developing next-generation interaction systems for presenters to control rendered graphics during live broadcast. On this project, the software skills I learned in my degree are proving invaluable, and I find myself on a daily basis using skills I learned on courses such as the Software Engineering project. My Advanced Media Systems project in my final year was closely related to what I now do, and mentioning that in my application helped steer the project allocation I was given here.

Other skills I use in my job include a variety of teamworking and project skills which I learned in the Electronics department, and future projects I work on are likely to require my hardware knowledge as well as the software skills I'm using right now.

As well as providing the background I needed for my job, York provided me with a social network which I imagine will stay with me for many years. Not only do I make trips back to York for events with groups such as York Student TV, but I am still in contact with some of my tutors and students in other year groups."
