Graduate Profiles

Chris Harte and class

Christopher Harte , 2001

Teaching Fellow, Queen Mary, University of London

"After graduating I went to work for a graphics card manufacturer programming windows driver software for a year. That seemed like a good idea to start with because it involved playing 3D computer games quite a lot and being paid for it. However, that quickly became quite repetitive so I decided to go back into academia to pursue a PhD in automatic music analysis with Professor Mark Sandler at the Centre for Digital Music which is part of the Department of Electronic Engineering at Queen Mary, University of London.

Three years later, at about the same time as my PhD funding was coming to an end, a teaching position was advertised for the Beijing University of Posts and Telecom/Queen Mary joint degree programme, which I successfully applied for. As a Teaching Fellow, I am based in London and have some undergraduate teaching responsibilities at Queen Mary. However, my main teaching work involves travelling to Beijing eight or nine times a year to deliver lecture courses in digital and microprocessor systems design. This job has given me a fantastic opportunity to experience life in a different (and increasingly important) culture first hand and to meet and become friends with some very interesting people along the way.

I enjoyed my time as an undergraduate at York very much and I have found the things I learned there both on taught courses and in practical projects very useful for my teaching and in my own research work. As a musician and graduate from the Electronic Engineering with Music Technology Systems course, I regularly use real world examples from the digital audio systems I studied to help explain otherwise abstract concepts on my own lecture courses. I try to judge my own teaching by the high standards I saw set at York, and I regularly find myself referring back to the things many of the lecturers did when I was an undergraduate that helped to inspire me and made their teaching interesting."
