Research in the Department of Electronics

Our department is home to world-leading research groups working in areas including nano-technology, computer architectures based on biological systems, electromagnetic compatibility and advanced wireless communications systems.

The department's major research groups are:

Audio Lab

Audio Lab

Work in the Audio Lab relates to understanding what gives a sound its naturalness, sound analysis and synthesis, and applications of audio and human perception of sound, particularly in three dimensions - together with complementary activity in visual signal processing and pattern recognition by the Visual Systems Lab.

Communications Group image

Communications

Wireless networking (including cognitive radio, wireless sensor networks, high-altitude platform systems and antenna design); coding for MIMO and iterative decoding schemes; MIMO architectures; signal processing for communications; High Altitude Platforms (HAPs).

Intelligent Systems Group image

Intelligent Systems

Bio-inspired architectures; electronics in biological systems research; control systems.

Physical Layer

Physical Layer

Applied electromagnetics; electron optics and nano-analysis; spintronics and nano-devices; microwave and optical device design and modelling.

Engineering Management

Engineering Education and Management

The Engineering Education and Management group researches the education of engineers and entrepreneur/intrapreneurship.

The department also has an active Engineering Management research programme.
