Hand-held Recognition System for British Bats (Chiroptera)

A small project in collaboration with the York Electronics Centre (YEC) in the Department of
Electronics and funded by University reach-out funds is the development of a hand-held bat
recognition system for British species.
The picture below shows the prototype capable of direct digital sampling of
signals up to 140kHz on 2 independent channels. The device has a graphic
display to allow time domain and frequency domain signals to be displayed
and can be connected to a PC for reprogramming for other taxa such as
insects and birds.
The recognition engine uses TDSC and a MLP ANN to
provide real-time recognition of species and call type (echolocation or
social calls). It is expected that the species database will be expanded to
cover European species.
Please contact Dr Chesmore
for updates on the progress or this device.
