INTRODUCTION
Bio-Applied Systems Engineering (BASE)
The Bio-applied Systems Engineering group is part of the Intelligent Systems
Engineering Research Group in the Electronics Department at the University
of York.
The philosophy of the group is to provide electronic and computing
solutions to problems in ecology, biology and entomology. Of particular
interest is the development of computer-aided taxonomy tools for automated
identification of species using bioacoustic signal processing, image
processing and other techniques.
Current research is aimed at developing
tools for biodiversity informatics, tools for rapid detection of quarantine taxa
and hand-held species identification systems. A second theme in the
group is biotelemetry with current research investigating miniature
biotelemetry systems for monitoring stress levels in pigs during transport
and smart tags for badger research.
