I was attracted to study Electronics at the University of York for my undergraduate studies because of its strong reputation and friendly atmosphere, and after studying three years here I was convinced that it is the perfect place to carry out a master degree. I especially appreciated the outstanding academic support from the department which ranges from supervision in groups, individual discussions, to workshops and demonstrations involving the whole year. I was particularly impressed by the lectures, which are very well structured, and full of interesting contents.
The department is also excellent in terms of its research. Thanks to my supervisors and department, I was lucky to pursue my PhD with a partner studentship which helps me study and live in York. I found it is just the place I want, the atmosphere is friendly, welcome and full with great learning interests; supervisors are patient to steer students to carry through creative studying; people are willing to share their research discoveries, such as in the department, there is a seminar every week to give the students a chance to share their research interests, and in our Intelligent Systems group, we have a meeting every week to exchange information in our own areas and discuss the questions in the research process.
As a female student, I have been pleasantly surprised how supportive and encouraging the department is. Currently, I have been working to assist the department in offering support and help to women in order for them to remain and progress in their career in this field. (This work is based on the principles of a national initiative called Athena Swan.)
As an international student, I could always find my favourite place to visit and enjoy my time here. York is a lovely historic city and the university is full of sports, entertainment activities and voluntary work. I have got an exciting and fun experience here!
