Min Xu, PhD student, Physical Layer Research Group

" My study in electronics started from Fudan University, China and I was admitted to the study abroad program in the University of Birmingham, UK for my final year. After that, I came to York to pursue my Ph.D, because the university enjoys a high reputation, the picturesque campus is located in a lovely historic city and the department offered me a partner studentship which helps me study and live in England.

So far, I have found it is just what I was looking for, a place where the learning environment is stimulating; a place where meticulous research precedes fancy data; a place where teachers are dedicated to guiding their students to see the inner beauty of doing research and a place where everyone shares their interesting research discovery. Such as in our physical layer group, some students are doing research concerning nanotechnology, which are quite different from mine, but it’s interesting to exchange information in our own areas. Currently, my research is focusing on low phase noise voltage controlled oscillators using CMOS integrated circuits.

Thanks to my supervisor’s effort, Semtech Ltd sponsors my study and provides even more precious opportunities. I have been invited to work in their R & D department in Southampton for a couple of months. Not only am I able to have a flavor of what is happening in industry, full access to the latest technology, I am also more than fortunate to be surrounded by a great many experts in the field who are all very friendly and always ready to answer my questions.

As an overseas student, one always wants a place not just for study but for life. Sports, entertainment, voluntary work, etc, I can always find my favorite and enjoy myself. As far as I am concerned, my life in York has been an exciting and rewarding experience than ever before."
