Lachlan Murray, PhD student, Intelligent Systems Research Group

" I first came to York in 2005 to study for my undergraduate degree in the Department of Computer Science. After graduating in 2009 with a MEng in Computer Systems and Software Engineering I made the switch from Computer Science to Electronics.

I am currently studying for a PhD as a member of the Intelligent Systems research group. The group combines a friendly atmosphere with a hard-working environment. Hosting both regular social evenings, and weekly technical meetings to discuss the research taking place within the group.

My PhD is focused in the area of Artificial Immune Systems, a field for which York is highly regarded worldwide. The project that I am working on is a large scale EU-funded robotics project, involving partners from several countries all across Europe. At York, by taking inspiration from the natural immune system, our aim is to improve the long-term survival of the robots.

Living in York is great, though small, there is a never a shortage of things to do and the more lively city of Leeds is not far away. The university campus, like the city, is very scenic, particularly during the summer. Although York is a relatively small university, with the recent addition of a second campus, soon to be home to a brand new robotics lab, it is ever expanding.

Both the city of York and the university campus played a big part in my decision to study here originally. The excellent standard of research and the university's consistently high ranking made the decision to stay here even easier. "
