FPGA Development

The department has considerable expertise in Xilinx™ development systems, with many current taught modules and research projects making use of Xilinx FPGAs, and the teaching laboratories using the Xilinx University Programme programming and development software.

Xilinx™ is a world leader in the supply of programmable logic solutions and the department makes use of Xilinx™ logic and embedded design tools throughout the teaching of our undergraduate and postgraduates programmes.

Chameleon II Board

The Chameleon II project system is a custom-built design based around a Xilinx™ XUP Virtex™-II Pro FPGA development system and provides additional I/O facilities including analogue and MIDI. It is used in a wide range of courses for practical hands-on experience with developing FPGA-based systems.

The Chameleon II project system was introduced into the laboratory and teaching programme in the summer term of 2008. The bespoke design is a culmination of many years experience of staff within the electronics department and it currently forms the basic platform for most undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses in the area of digital design, microprocessor architectures and embedded systems.

Taught MSc FPGA Board

To support the higher requirements of our MSc in Digital System Engineering, a specialised teaching and project facility is equipped with the Xilinx™ XUP Virtex™-5 LX110T development system. This provides a more feature-rich general purpose evaluation and development platform.
